Showcasing the ease and power of integrating Web services, Industrial Medium Software’s online demonstration marries our Expressroom Document Assistant Service with the Calais Web Service from Reuters to generate and embed rich semantic metadata in Microsoft® Word documents.

The Expressroom Document Assistant Service is a Web service that employs the Expressroom Document Assistant technology to extract content from native file formats and transform it into XML. Since its rollout, Document Assistant has helped ease the workload of analysts within the Intelligence Community. This demonstration is yet another display of the extensibility of Expressroom enhancing workers’ productivity.

The Calais Web Service (http://opencalais.com), operated by Reuters, provides for the automated generation of rich semantic metadata. Using natural language processing and machine learning techniques, the Calais Web service looks inside text and locates entities, facts, and events, and then returns them to the caller in RDF format.

Document Assistant extracts the content of a user-submitted Microsoft Word document and passes it to Calais. Using the identified metadata, Document Assistant regenerates the original document, inserting a cover sheet with links to bookmarked entities. The resulting Microsoft Word document is then available to the submitter for review.
